James Vavra has been working with wood since he could barely see over the workbench in his grandfather’s workshop. In 2006 he and his wife relocated to East Nashville, where he has focused on woodturning. Vases, hollow vessels, bowls, platters, and other turned objects are first created on the lathe and then – frequently – surface embellishments in the form of textures, dyes, carvings, paint, and patinas are added. The occasional flat piece still slips in to the mix; custom table creations – often featuring found, repurposed structural members – are another area of focus.
His work has been featured in local galleries in Nashville, TN and pieces are reside in private collections throughout the US.
